Fossil Mint Sandstone Paving reviews

Thanks for the nice stone and thanks for the brilliant service that you provided. Patio is finally finished now and we can look forward to our first summer in the new garden.

Kerry Anne - Putney

We use a lot of paving supplied by London Stone for our garden projects. The product and service is always very good. I would recommend them and often do.

Greenwood Garden Ltd - Twickenham

Dear Rebecca, You may remember I bought some Sandstone from you at the back end of last year. The courtyard was completed back in March/April and is a great success. I promised to let you have a couple of photos which I attach- I hope they are of interest. It was good to do business with London Stone- I tell my friends and visitors how pleased we are!

Ian Townsend - London

Duncan at the Stanwell Moor Depot gave us fantastic service and assistance. We have now had the Fossil Mint patio laid and it looks beautiful. Plenty of fossils in it to add interest. The advice and service we received regarding a problem we had made for ourselves was of particular note. The solution recommended to us by Duncan worked perfectly. Will be recommending your company to family and friends. Excellent value as well as service- you deserve to prosper.

iVeronica Woolf - Gerrards Cross

Recently laid a few patios using this stone. Good price. Much better calibrated and better quality stone than what marshalls, bradstone etc has to offer. Sawn on one side which makes it much easier to lay. Great customer service.

Fossil Mint Sandstone Paving laying instructions

Prior to paving drainage should always be considered, wherever possible drain away from the house, and finished height of paving should be two courses below the damp proof course, unless appropriate allowances are made.  Paving should be laid with a fall of 1:80.  The fall also needs to be applied to the excavation and the sub-base to ensure all layers in the construction of the patio are equal.  London Stone recommend seeking expert assistance.  The paving stones do have a top and bottom; the top face will be the better looking of the two sides, sometimes the underside of the paver will be grooved due to calibration.

  1. Excavate area to required depth
  2. Install recommended thickness of TYPE1 MOT, and compact using petrol compacter plate
  3. Use String lines along two opposite edges of the area to be paving, these strings will need to incorporate the fall of 1:80.  There should be a level string joining the two strings, and paving should begin from a corner with one of the fall lines and the level line.  This could be along the back of a house or building.  If the area of paving is wider than 5m it is worth breaking the area up into segments as long strings will dip in the middle.  The string lines will be set at the finished height and the plane which they create will be the exact surface plane of the completed patio.
  4. Take some of the semi-wet mix mortar and spread out a full bed, larger than the first paver to be laid. Using a trowel, create peaks and troughs in the mortar.  Place the paver on top of the mortar.  At this point the paver should be sitting higher than the string lines.  Using a rubber mallet tap the paver down until aligned to the strings.  The paver should be level along one plane and sloping with the other, use a spirit level to confirm. Paving needs to be laid on a full bed of wet mortar 5:1 sharp sand to cement.
  5. Random Paving:  when laying random paving the rules to follow to ensure a good spread are as follows, never let a line of pavers continue for more than four slabs, never have four corners of pavers touching or forming a cross, always monitor numbers of different size slabs which are being laid and take care to use the same amounts of the different sizes as you go.  You do not want one side of the patio to use excessive amounts of small pavers, as the other side will have mainly large pavers and the patio will not be in balance.
  6. Regular/same size paving:  When laying single size paving more strings should be used.  One more string should be laid parallel to the level line; this should be set as the gauge of paving+5mm away from the level line.  I.e. when using 600x600 pavers the parallel line should be 605mm away from the level line.  The height of the line will be governed by the fall lines already set.  Now the paving is simply laid as per step 4 between the strings.  Periodically check the strings are in the correct position.  When the row is complete, simply move the string the required distance along the fall lines for the next row of paving.
  7. Repeat step 4 until required area is paved.  Continue checking levels as you go with long spirit level or straight edge.  Leave 10mm gaps for pointing.  Remove any mortar from the surface of the paving as you go, using a damp sponge.

Fossil Mint Sandstone Paving buying guide

London Stone Buying Guide

Buying natural stone is a little bit different than buying man made products and London Stone would recommend all customers read the following.

Always order an additional 5-10% to allow for wastage, cuts and the occasional piece which you may not like the look of.

Don’t expect all the pavers or tiles to be exactly the same as any samples provided.  Different products have different characteristics and some will be more consistent than others.  Please speak to a member of staff who can tell you what to expect.

If possible come down to the showroom and see the large areas of stones we have on display, this will give a much clearer picture than a small sample, and help you to make a more informed decision.

Before applying any cleaning agents, sealants or any chemicals to natural stone ALWAYS seek professional guidance.

Some products may require sealing and some products will not, please enquire for further details to seek if this will apply to the product you are interested in.

If you have any special circumstances in your property such as damp conditions, or excess amounts of vegetation please speak with a member of the team to ensure chosen product is suitable for the conditions.

Sawn paving and tiles are subject to tolerances of +/- 2mm

Hand cut paving is subject to tolerances of +/- 5mm

Natural stone colour and texture

Natural stone can vary in colour, tone & texture. The colours shown in all London Stone brochures and websites are as accurate as modern photography and printing allow. We would always recommend viewing products in daylight prior to purchasing. No sorting of crates will be permitted.
Natural stone can develop brown markings as its iron content oxidises. This is a temporary phenomenon which will disappear over a period of time.  Products delivered may vary from samples previously supplied, and this is completely normal for all natural products.

Wastage

Natural stone is a natural material and as such will sometimes contain small chips, blemishes and imperfections which can occur during the manufacture, packaging and transport process . London Stone recommend purchasing extra stone to allow for cuts and wastage. When ordering any sawn material in particular we recommend ordering a minimum of 5% additional material for wastage.

Thickness & dimensions

All stated thickness and dimensions are nominal and as such are subject to cutting tolerances.
